Cylindrical Grinding Shop| What is Cylindrical Grinding?

For precisely grinding round parts, a cylindrical grinding machine is used on both internal & external diameter to render very fine tolerances for steel, carbide, aluminium, stainless steel and metallic material. A grinding machine is typically characterized by constant rotation of the object and the grinding wheel (which is fed towards and away from the work). Either the work or the wheel is traversed with respect to the other.

The cylindrical grinder can actually work on shapes other than just round parts but the object must have a central axis of rotation. Examples of these shapes would be ellipses, cams, and crankshafts.

There are a few different types of cylindrical grinding and are used depending on their strengths and applications.

Outside diameter grinding is performed on external surface of an object. The grinding wheel’s internal width is smaller than the object’s external with object and the grinding wheel are rotated in opposite directions which results in friction and renders a finer grind with reduced risk of jamming.

Inside diameter grinding is performed on the internal surface of an object. In this case the grinding wheel’s external width is smaller than the internal width of the object. Just as with outside diameter grinding, the grinding wheel and the object rotated in opposite directions giving reversed direction contact of the two surfaces where the grinding occurs.

Plunge grinding is similar to outside diameter grinding, except a major difference being that the grinding wheel makes continuous contact with a single point of the object instead of traversing the object’s surface. It depends on the machine itself how exactly this ‘plunge’ is achieved.

Creep feed grinding - Creep Feed is a form of grinding where a full hunk of cut is removed in a single iteration of the wheel. This technique can reduce manufacturing time by half, but it usually requires a purpose built machine.
